The NEXCEL technology is premised on a radical improvement in lubricant performance on vehicles fitted with the system. This amazing new hardware opens up the options of fundamentally different approaches to the development of lubricant formulations which offer significantly better performance than today’s engine oils.
A dedicated team has been created to function as a stand-alone business that will manufacture, and supply NEXCEL oil cells to the market which will result in improved powertrain efficiency, better serviceability and substantial environmental benefits. The market entry for this technology is through the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of the automotive and industrial market.
The purpose of this exciting new role within the team is to help realise the formulatory vision to develop world class radical and bespoke lubricants that work synergistically with the new NEXCEL hardware system. To achieve this the incumbent will need:
A creative approach and scientific mind to deliver key benefits including fuel economy, extended oil drain intervals, reduced oil volumes and used oil recycling
The ability to leverage Castrol’s global knowledge and understanding
Skill to interface effectively with internal stakeholders and third parties, in particular with partners and suppliers, to progress the NEXCEL lubricant development
Capability to run and manage numerous technical programmes of various size in parallel
Close relationships with Castrol’s Global Lubricants Technology (GLT), Procurement and BP Legal teams will be essential to ensure new components and technologies are assessed and protected, making certain competitive advantage is maintained. Alongside this, understanding the future role of re-refined base oil in lubricants of the future will be essential to delivering the sustainability aspects of the NEXCEL technology.
The successful candidate will possess a good understanding of automotive powertrain, vehicle and lubricant technologies with a capability to think outside the box and question conventional wisdom while applying disciplined rigour to develop truly unique lubricant designs for NEXCEL
Lead and project manage aspects of lubricant technology development for NEXCEL
Development of bespoke lubricants to fit the needs of the different OEMs
Assist in developing the thought leadership around radical lubricant development and hardware enabled lubricants
Run test programmes to demonstrate unique lubricant benefits while managing the associated budgets
Operating safely in a unique environment
Support with generating an IP portfolio for NEXCEL lubricants
Develop and maintain close working relationships with GLT and procurement teams to ensure that the lubricant benefits are understood
Nurture and manage relationships with Formulated Products Technology (FPT), the broader BP, universities and suppliers
Act as an ambassador for NEXCEL
Rigorously work with appropriate external resources and hold them to account
Excellent project and budget management skills
Assist with the technical development of projects with our strategic partners and suppliers
Interpreting the formulatory vision to implement bespoke and radical lubricant technologies for NEXCEL
Keep on challenging the status quo and seeing technical challenges through to completion
Delivering significant functional benefits including improved fuel economy, extended oil drain intervals and reduced oil volumes through exploiting bespoke and radical lubricant approaches
Executing multiple work programmes with partners such as GLT, OEMs and suppliers while learning and building capability for NEXCEL enabled lubricants
Understanding the technologies that may have a future influence on automotive lubricants
Operate as ‘One Team’ using clear communication and a collaborative working style
Working with the engineering team to influence the scope of the NEXCEL hardware to maximise the benefits of the lubricant design
Working across geographical and cultural boundaries
A chemistry or technology based degree
Essential experience and job requirements
Significant industrial experience in a relevant field
Extensive lubricant formulatory knowledge
A proven track record of delivering projects safely
Experience in formulation development at Castrol, an additive company or an oil marketing company with track record of success
Energy, enthusiasm and a drive to deliver
Ability to work as part of a small core team who will be responsible for driving this fast moving development agenda
Positive ‘can do’ attitude, able to think outside the box and open to new ideas
Proficient in managing multiple projects and suppliers in parallel
Ability to draw on creative skills to help generate new and ground-breaking propositions
Skilful in use of data analysis tools

The role will be based in Reading. However, the incumbent will be expected to spend some time working at the Castrol Technology Centre, Pangbourne which is a 15 minute drive from Reading. The exact nature of the time split between sites will be variable and dependent on the on-going projects.
