The Procurement Category Specialist (CS) Convenience Retail plays a supporting role in realising Downstream Procurement’s (DP) objective to become a world-class procurement organisation with leading capability in Procurement category management that delivers relevant, value-adding category strategies to BP’s Downstream businesses. The CS provides dedicated specialist Procurement category strategy development and implementation support to the Procurement Category Manager Convenience Retail for assigned regional or global subcategories. Working with colleagues in the procurement business interface team, they are responsible for engaging business stakeholders to understand business priorities and requirements, and to ensure category strategies and implementation align with those needs.
The primary focus of the CS role is to support the Procurement Category Manager Convenience Retail to define the Procurement elements of our Convenience and associated category strategies by performing analysis and co-ordinating key inputs e.g. supply market analysis, cost modelling and benchmarking. The CS also supports the Procurement Category Manager Convenience Retail to implement Procurement elements of assigned category strategy projects by managing the localisation of the category strategy, sourcing activities and contract management to agreed timelines, as well as supplier management activities. They are also responsible for supporting the Procurement Category Manager Convenience Retail in delivering value to the business by ensuring compliance with agreed Procurement elements of category strategies and sourcing expectations. Ultimately they are responsible for the execution of all of these activities to deliver the objective of providing the business with a supply base that supports safe, reliable and compliant operations, and that also delivers the innovation and business benefits agreed in the procurement category strategy.
The role supports the Procurement Category Manager, the Retail business Centre of Excellence (CoE), and with time the respective local retail trading teams, within their defined procurement category scope to develop strategies to drive supplier innovation, value and efficiency into our Retail convenience offers across Europe.
The role will focus on supporting the Procurement Category Manager and Global Procurement Category Director, Retail Convenience across the following areas:
Supporting the business in the negotiation of Retail Partnerships – such as our existing partnerships with M&S in the UK and Rewe in Germany.
Sourcing and negotiation support for merchandise for resale – including Supplier Trading Terms, supply chain cost of goods, partnering with the Retail Category Managers on range reviews, new product developments and Suppler Performance Management, across defined scope.
Supporting the business in offer development – leveraging innovation in our supply base and partnering with the retail business to identify business opportunities to bring about a step change in BP’s retail convenience capabilities and drive a point of difference to our competitors.

Stakeholder Management Support
Support the Category Manager Convenience Retail, manage the interface between Procurement category strategy development and implementation, working in partnership the across assigned subsectors and or locations.
Communicate content to ensure that category specific messages are effectively disseminated across the DP organisation
Support the objective of no compromise on safe and compliant operations
Support the Procurement Category Manager to develop a strong working relationship with the Global Retail Convenience CoE team and, with time, the local Retail category trading teams
Support the Global Retail Convenience CoE team by providing access to Procurement tools and reporting
Support the building of a pipeline of procurement initiatives to support the CoE and, trading teams relative to Sales and COGS targets
Support the development of a Supplier Performance Management framework for Strategic Suppliers, across assigned scope.
Ensure the appropriate due diligence and risk mitigation measures are in place for Supplier/Partner Selection and contract protection.
Category Strategy & Implementation Support
Develop Procurement category strategies for assigned categories, which may be medium complexity categories
Support CM to provide deep expertise of category: access MI, supply market knowledge and key dynamics and latest thinking within the field to inform strategy
Working with the global category network, and the Convenience CoE, support the category manager to contribute to the development of retail convenience strategy.
Coordinate inputs to the development of Procurement category and sourcing strategies i.e. supply market analysis, cost modelling and benchmarking for assigned locations and or portfolios.
Support Category Manager Retail Convenience with Procurement category strategy implementation activities,
Support Category Manager Retail Convenience to ensure timeliness and quality of all contracts required for safe, compliant and reliable business operations i.e. implementation in the appropriate systems, category compliance, contract management
Support local contract management, performance reporting and the monitoring and management of compliance
Ensure compliance to BP policies and DP functional guidelines.
Responsible for the Value Delivery in the assigned category and regional scope
Accountable for value delivery tracking from the Procurement category strategy implementation.
Responsible for the development and delivery of annual plans for category and scope.
Working with the business interface organization, routinely communicate with integrity across key business stakeholders to align the strategic intent of the category strategy and the regional/local business needs.
Sourcing and Supplier Management
In conjunction with Convenience COE and in line with agreed business and Procurement category strategies, support the Category Manager to determine the sourcing framework for the convenience category and the forward sourcing programme
Support the consistent application of supplier qualification and assurance processes,
In line with agreed sourcing programme, and in partnership with the Convenience COE/local trading teams, support category sourcing and supplier negotiations, ensuring application of appropriate procurement methodologies and business approvals through agreed governance structures.
Participate as required in convenience partner negotiations,
Support application of appropriate contractual terms for all convenience supply contracts, in line with standard procurement processes. Support business in compliance with contractual terms.
Support business in managing contracts through application of standard procurement performance tracking and monitoring processes
Working with the Convenience COE and local trading teams, support a structured approach to supplier management for agreed sub categories
University degree in a technical or related equivalent business discipline.
MCIPS/ISM qualification, or at stage of pre-qualification, desirable.
Essential experience and job requirements
Skilled in category strategy development and execution
Skilled in in sourcing, contracting, supplier management and contract management
Knowledge of P2P processes, SAP, Ariba e-sourcing or other e-procurement tools is desirable.
Demonstrable experience in the relevant Retail Convenience category is preferable
A passion for Retail as well as a focus on achieving excellence in your role by forming strong networks and working relationships with other stakeholders within BP and externally.
Experience in an FMCG or the following categories will be an advantage; Retail, Supply Chain, Product Development, Operations, Marketing, Indirects, Financial Services, IT.
Experience of successful delivery working in virtual and cross functional teams
