To lead and develop a team of professional Analysts and Specialists responsible for the testing of fuels, lubricants and related products. This function provides support to the global Formulated Products Technology teams primarily locally based, but also to all parts of the Lubes and Fuels businesses and wider BP as required . This is a team leader role and the principal performance measures are safety, quality, timeliness and cost.
Manage and deliver an innovative and efficient analytical service, and/or technique development portfolio, in accordance with the requirements of customers and key stakeholders. Strive for innovation in efficiency, accuracy, technique development and application.
Provide leadership to your team potentially comprising of experts, specialists, analysts and placement students as well as Agency workers which are occasionally required to cover workload peaks. This requires an understanding of a wide range of analytical techniques and their relevance to lubricants and fuels, but the focus of the role is people management and development rather than technical expertise.
Recruit and develop high-quality staff for the short, medium, and long-term benefit of the company
Prioritise work across the whole customer-base in conjunction with Technologists/Senior technologists in each area, taking into account both business and strategic importance. This requires a strong current awareness of all the customer businesses and priorities. At the same time, manage the logistics of supply and demand of resource against work.
Work with the Analytical Manager or local Manager (e.g. CTC Manager) to continuously improve operational efficiency in your team and specialist area, adopting best practice as appropriate.
Work with other Team Leaders in the Analytical function to ensure analytical service demand is met within expected and agreed timeframes, and that any deviation from this is communicated effectively to customers.
Monitor the team’s performance against agreed KPIs, ensuring that targets are achieved
Promote the capabilities and depth of technology to OEMs and customers, both during technical tours, and at their worksites, as required
Assist the Analytical Manager in controlling the Analytical budget, both revenue and Capex. Work with Technologists/Senior technologists to recommend and justify capital expenditure
Advise on specialist areas of analytical technology/techniques with internal and external partners as required
Develop and maintain beneficial relationships with customers, stakeholders, and third parties

Balancing priorities of a wide ranging customer base and managing their expectations. Connectivity with the global function, and the customers globally and cross time zones.
Degree in a related scientific discipline (Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science etc.)
Essential experience and job requirements
Significant industry experience, with a good working knowledge of industrial processes and a demonstrated ability to interact well with customers, partners and other third parties.
Well-developed people leadership and development skills are essential to this role, as are strong presentation and influencing skills.
A demonstrated record of ability to interact at all levels, and across all functions, both internally and externally, coupled with experience working in a cross cultural environment is necessary as this role is required to network extensively with the global product development teams in UK, Germany, China and the US.
A technical understanding of the key lubes specification tests and standards.

Key lubricant product ranges include engine oils, brake fluids and anti-freezes for cars, trucks and motorbikes, as well as fluids and greases for shipping and industrial applications. Other major product development centers for lubricants are in Neuhof (Germany) where all BP's transmission and axle oils are developed, Naperville (US) and Mönchengladbach (Germany), where specialized industrial fluids such as cutting oils and metal forming fluids are formulated. In Wadala (India) the next generation of lubricants for cars, motorcycles and trucks is being developed. The Technology Centre in Shanghai (China) provides technical services for automotive, industrial and marine lubricants. Smaller satellite technology centers provide local technical support to the lubricants businesses and manufacturing operations in the regions.
BP’s Fuels Value Chains (FVCs) supply transportation fuels to markets in North America, Europe, Southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the Pangbourne site, Fuels teams are also based in Naperville (US), Bochum (Germany) and Cape Town (South Africa), where they provide direct support to the regional Fuels Value Chain businesses.
