Role synopsis
The BP Group Competitive Intelligence team provides analysis and insight on the competitive landscape that BP faces to inform the development of Group and Segment strategy. Its principal customers are the BP Board, the Executive Team, Segment Executives but we also work with any part of the BP business wishing to understand their competitive environment.

The team provides coverage across the energy industry sector and main players, including renewables. Within this, the E&P Competitive Analyst provides insight, based upon thorough analysis, of the larger Upstream E&P companies as well as the North American unconventional players. The analyst has full accountability for ongoing analysis and a diverse range of company and industry research projects, including preparation of reports and presentations to senior executives, and the wider business.

Key accountabilities
The successful applicant will undertake in depth analysis, write briefing notes, prepare presentations and present insights to various audiences. Core responsibilities are:

Timely delivery of faultless analysis, including but not limited to Quarterly results, in order to provide commentary & insights into key E&P companies and sector financial performance and strategic developments. Provide support to the CI Supermajor Analyst in examining results of competitors.

Board/Executive Team presentations and reports, to provide analysis of Upstream company and sector performance, strategy and portfolio developments. Visualising and communicating insights through graphics and concise writing.

Initiate and lead thematic research both within CI and also with BP segment colleagues, to develop greater insights and support performance benchmarking activity. Experiment with data disclosed by competitors to find new analytical lenses.

Develop external and internal networks across all levels of the organisation to share and gain insight and intelligence. Specific accountability for developing excellent working relationships and networks across the upstream business. Also responsible for developing relationships with external intelligence, data and service providers.

As the senior analyst within the CI team, the successful candidate will support the VP Competitive Intelligence in providing leadership and guidance to ensure the development of team capability, the efficient and excellent delivery of all team accountabilities and also make a significant contribution to the development of the CI strategic direction.
Essential Education
Degree level or equivalent.
Essential experience and job requirements
Familiarity with oil industry financial and operational data disclosures, and knowledge of upstream business drivers, cycles and performance metrics. A strong ability to interpret publicly disclosed financial statements and accounts.

Strong analytical mind-set, with an attention to detail yet able to identify and simplify key insights.

Strong upstream industry knowledge essential. Familiarity with BP is desirable.

Ability to communicate insights effectively to executive level audiences. Concise and clear written skills, an eye for well-designed visualisation of complex data and strong oral communications skills.

Excellent self-awareness and proven influencing and informal leadership skills.

Advanced Excel skills with ability to manage complex data and spreadsheet links.

Ability to build an advanced knowledge of external data providers and their tools such as Wood Mackenzie, IHSMarkit and FactSet.

Self-starter with ability to succeed in a challenging commercial environment and lead projects with limited supervision.

Team player who puts the team above the individual and contributes to the success of each team member.

Effective in relationship building and networking across all levels of the organisation.
